Karen: Through the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) we have access to a ton of market research! If you'd like, I'd be happy to get you what you need to help further develop your business plan. There is no cost for this, of course; it's just one of the benefits we can use to help new businesses like yours. I am guessing that you are looking for demographic and psychographic information for the areas around your potential location, financial ratios consistent with your industry, maybe a consumer profile of who may be the best customer, sample business plan, list of competitors, etc? It normally takes anywhere from a few days to two weeks to obtain all of this. If you would like this, let me know what items of market research you would like in addition to what I mentioned.

Hi Karen: I agree with what Jonathan is saying. With the ease of access to e-commerce and the tools of social networking, it makes a lot of sense to use those as a method to bring awareness of your products to your target customers. Depending on your ultimate goal (maybe it's to have your own home decor store or art studio), you might think about small 'baby steps' to get to that ultimate goal. With that in mind, you may want to consider a hybrid of selling on the Internet, combined with having a small area in a complimentary retail storefront where you can market your wall decor items. Finding a complimentary retail store would be key here....so I would focus on a retail store that is likely to attract the customers that are most likely to purchase goods that you sell. Either way, congrats on taking those first steps of starting your own business....it will be an exciting time for you!

Karen it seems you have the dream of owning your own store. Deciding whether you want a store front or e-commerce only is actually a personal preference. It depends on if you want to be local or global. In my option you can have both. E-commerce will be more cost effective to start, as there are tons of free tools that will allow you to get started selling online. On the other hand because of the products your selling your customers might want to touch and feel your products. But either way you go you better have a website. I read a quote the other day that said "If your business doesn't have a website, then your business doesn't exist". That is absolutely true now-a-days. My 2 cents is do BOTH. Again, it's a personal preference. But for me I want to be as successful as possible and in your line of business, that means selling to the world. You have to include e-commerce. I would be happy to discuss this further with you and show you some ways to market your business online.
